Baking for your dogs

There is nothing better than baking homemade treats for your four legged family members. Not only can you be sure that they are healthy, but its the perfect activity for kids to do something special for their dog or a special dog in their life.

We love experimenting in the kitchen and coming up with nutritious dog treats that leave the pups drooling. Here are a few of our favorite recipes. These are all made with human grade ingredients, try and resist taking nibble with your afternoon cup of tea, we certainly couldn't!

Apple & Blueberry Pie Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 small handful fresh blueberries (or substitute for Cranberries for a more festive cookie to go with your dogs Turkey dinner)
  • 1 apple peeled and chopped into bite size pieces
  • 1 1/2 cup flour. Can use standard plain flour but substitute with a wheat alternate flour like rice flour if your dog does not tolerate wheat.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • teaspoon baking soda
  • I teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon of natural honey
  • Dash of warm water or unsweetened applesauce, as needed to get your dough to the right consistency.


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
  2. Chop the blueberries and apples into bite size pieces and place in a mixing bowl with the honey, melted butter and cinnamon.  
  3. Add the flour, oats and baking powder to a separate bowl and mix until combined. 
  4. Whisk the egg then add dry ingredients mix.
  5. Add the fruit mixture and mix until combined.
  6. If the dough is too dry and crumbly add a dash of warm water or unsweetened applesauce and mix until it sticks together in a ball. Add a little more liquid if it's still too dry. 
  7. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out and using your choice of dog inspired cutters, cut out your cookies and place on a baking tray.  
  8. Bake until golden brown and crisp, about 15 minutes. Cool completely before offering to your dog.

Peanut Butter and Honey Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2  cup flour. Can use standard plain flour but substitute with a wheat alternate flour like rice flour if your dog does not tolerate wheat.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon of natural honey
  • 2 teaspoons of peanut butter 
  • Dash of warm water, as needed to get your dough to the right consistency.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
  2. Mix the melted butter, honey and peanut butter in a mixing bowl.  
  3. Add the flour and baking powder in a separate bowl and mix until combined. 
  4. Whisk together the beaten egg with dry ingredients mix and then add in the peanut butter, honey & butter mix and mix until combined.
  5. If the dough is too dry and crumbly add a dash of warm water and mix until it sticks together in a ball. Add a little more liquid if it's still too dry. 
  6. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out and using your choice of dog inspired cutters, cut out your cookies and place on a baking tray.  
  7. Bake until golden brown and crisp, about 15 minutes. Cool completely before offering to your dog.
  8. You can decorate your cookies with a melted carob or dog friendly yogurt drop. These can be purchased from a pet store, melted down and drizzled onto the cookie.
