Easy Children’s Party Ideas for Ages 8–10

Easy Children’s Party Ideas for Ages 8–10

Planning a party for an eight, nine or ten-year-old can feel like entering slightly different territory. They may have grown out of traditional party games, but they still want to celebrate properly and have fun with their friends.

At this age, it’s usually less about decorations and more about having something good to do. They enjoy a challenge, like being given a little independence and definitely notice if an activity feels too young for them.

The good news is that you still don’t need an expensive venue or entertainer. Choose one main activity, add easy food and cake, and leave them a little time to chat and be silly together.

Here are four easy, budget-friendly party ideas that work particularly well for children aged 8–10.

Pizza-Making Party

Pizza-making is easy to organise and takes care of the party activity and food at the same time.

Simple setup ideas

  • Cover the table with a wipe-clean cloth

  • Give each child a ball of ready-made pizza dough

  • Put toppings into small bowls

  • Use paper chef hats or aprons if you already have them

Activities

  • Shape and top individual pizzas

  • Invent a name for each pizza

  • Create a menu for an imaginary restaurant

  • Have a taste test once everything is cooked

Write each child’s name on a piece of baking paper beneath their pizza so you don’t lose track of which one belongs to whom.

While the pizzas are cooking, you could play a quick game, decorate cupcake boxes or serve drinks and snacks.

Movie Night Party

A movie party is one of the easiest options for this age, especially for a smaller group.

Simple setup ideas

  • Add cushions, blankets and beanbags

  • Dim the lights and use fairy lights

  • Serve popcorn in individual cups

  • Make simple cinema tickets

Activities

  • Vote for the film beforehand

  • Decorate popcorn boxes

  • Have a film quiz

  • Take a break halfway through for pizza and cake

One film is normally enough. Starting with food or a short activity gives the children time to talk before settling down to watch it.

Creative Challenge Party

Children aged 8–10 can concentrate for longer and usually enjoy making something they’re proud to take home.

Simple setup ideas

  • Cover one large table

  • Put craft materials into shared containers

  • Give each child their own workspace

  • Display a few ideas for inspiration without making everyone copy the same design

Activities

  • Decorate a tote bag or pencil case

  • Paint a mini canvas

  • Make friendship bracelets

  • Design and decorate biscuits

  • Create a bedroom door sign

Keep the project achievable within about 45 minutes. Anything too complicated can become frustrating, especially with a larger group.

The finished creation can also replace a traditional party bag.

Practical Party Tips for Children Aged 8–10

Children in this age group are more independent, but a little planning still helps everything run smoothly.

✔ Ask for their input. Let the birthday child choose the main activity, food or music.

✔ Keep it to around two hours. That’s normally enough time for an activity, food, cake and some unstructured fun.

✔ Don’t make the theme too childish. A colour scheme and one main activity may be all the “theme” you need.

✔ Have a loose plan. They don’t need every minute organised, but too much empty time can quickly become chaotic.

✔ Keep competitions light-hearted. Children at this age can take winning and losing quite seriously.

✔ Have more food than you think you need. Eight to ten-year-olds can arrive surprisingly hungry.

✔ Check the music and film choices. Age ratings and lyrics are worth checking beforehand.

✔ Give them some space. They will probably want time to talk and make each other laugh without an adult directing everything.

You may find that parties naturally become smaller at this age. Inviting a handful of close friends can make the celebration feel more special and is often much easier to manage.

Party Bags That Don’t Feel Too Young

Finding party bags for older primary-school children can be difficult. Tiny plastic toys may feel too young, but most children still enjoy having something to take home.

A small activity they can complete independently is a good alternative. Baking kits, craft projects and edible activities still feel fun without being babyish.

At Craft & Crumb, our baking party bags give children everything they need to enjoy another activity at home. They can bake, decorate and get creative rather than taking home a bag filled with plastic items that are quickly forgotten.

Choose a design that matches the party theme or allow guests to pick their favourite. It’s an easy and more thoughtful way to finish the celebration.
