Whether it’s a drizzly afternoon or a full-on rainy week, these indoor food activities are ideal for children aged 3–8. All low-prep. All high-fun. And all taste-tested and approved by little hands! Use them with what you have at home or pair them with one of our Craft & Crumb baking kits to add to the excitement.
🍪 1. Paint-Your-Own Biscuits
A fun edible art activity for kids
Give your child the chance to become a biscuit artist! Start by adding white sugar paste icing a plain biscuit, then hand over a brush or cotton bud and let them paint with edible food colouring. They can design rainbows, initials, funny faces or rainy-day themes — whatever their imagination dreams up.
This is a brilliant way to blend baking with creativity, and a perfect indoor activity when it’s too wet to go out.

2. Candy Construction Challenge: Build Your Own Sweet Structures!
When it’s pouring outside and energy levels are rising indoors, this hands-on STEM building activity is the perfect way to keep kids busy, creative and learning — all while using a few tasty treats!
The Candy Construction Challenge invites children to use gummy sweets, mini marshmallows and toothpicks to build towers, bridges, shapes or even little creatures. It’s part baking, part building, and totally brilliant for rainy-day play.
You’ll Need:
-
Gummy sweets (like jelly drops or cola bottles)
-
Mini marshmallows
-
Toothpicks or cocktail sticks
-
A plate or tray to build on
What to Do:
-
Set the challenge: Ask your child to build the tallest tower, the longest bridge, or even a marshmallow monster!
-
Start connecting: Use the toothpicks to connect marshmallows and gummies — they’re sticky, squishy and perfect for holding shapes.
-
Test and learn: Can your structure stand up? What happens if you make the base wider? What breaks and what holds?
🥞 3. Make Pancake Faces
A brilliant breakfast or snack idea for kids stuck indoors
Whether it’s a rainy Saturday morning or a midweek boredom-buster, making pancakes is a fun and filling food activity. Once the pancakes are cooked (grown-up help needed!), lay out toppings like bananas, blueberries, yogurt, mini marshmallows or chocolate chips and let the kids create pancake portraits.
Can they make a smiley face? A weather-themed design? Or even a silly pancake monster?
