Rainbow Toast Recipe - SNACKTIVITY: DAY 4 OF 28

🕒 Ready in 10 minutes
(5 minutes prep · 5 minutes toast)

Welcome to Day 4 of our 30-Day Snacktivity Series!
This Rainbow Toast is a Craft & Crumb favourite—and for good reason. It's part art project, part breakfast, and 100% fun! Just a splash of milk, some food colouring, and a slice of bread turns into a technicolour treat that’ll impress kids of all ages (and adults too!).

Ingredients

  • 🍞 White bread slices (the lighter the better to make colours pop)

  • 🥛 Milk – a splash for each colour

  • 🎨 Food colouring – rainbow shades or whatever you have on hand

  • 🖌️ Clean paintbrushes or cotton buds – for applying the colours

Method

  1. Make your edible paint:
Pour a small splash of milk into separate cups or bowls—one for each colour you’d like to use. Add a drop or two of food colouring and stir to mix.

  2. Paint the toast:
Using your brushes or cotton buds, paint directly onto the slices of bread. Stripes, spots, rainbows—anything goes!

  3. Toast and reveal the magic:
Pop the bread in the toaster (or under the grill) until golden and toasty. Watch the colours brighten and toast to life!

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with a little butter, or drizzle with honey or chocolate spread

  • Pair with a smoothie or fresh fruit for a cheery breakfast

  • Great for weekend mornings, sleepovers, or themed parties!

Storage Tips

Painted bread can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 12 hours. Toast just before serving to keep it crisp and vibrant.

Easy Variations

  • Use dairy-free milk like almond or oat for allergy-friendly versions

  • Try patterns: rainbows, animals, initials, or even faces!

  • Make it educational: mix colours and talk about primary/secondary colour blending as you go

FAQs

Can we use wholemeal bread?
You can, but white bread works best for showing off those bright colours.

Is it safe to eat food colouring like this?
Absolutely, just use food-grade colouring. You only need a drop or two!

What if the colours bleed?
Use a light hand—dabbing rather than soaking—and it’ll work perfectly.

Tip

🖌️ Keep some brushes just for food crafts! That way you’ll always be ready for magical mornings like this one.
